firmly believe we are triune, just like God. God is Father, Son, and Spirit. We are Spirit, Soul, and Body. We often devote our lives to our soul and body, forgetting the spirit. But, those of us who are Gay or Lesbian Christians, we sometimes forget the body, too. All three must be in balance. So, make sure your body is as healthy as your spirit and your soul.
eople write me now and then and complain about "certain pictures" on the website, pictures of people, and pictures of ME "supposedly" unclothed. They think it is not Christian, or sinful, and I have a problem. I remind them WHY these pictures appear. The photographs used here relate to the topic discussed, to show the muscle groups involved, or to show athletic development. People see what they see; I sometimes believe their objections actually reveal their true hearts. So, I remind you, too, to have a proper and healthy perspective on art and photography, for rarely are they the problem; instead, the problem lies in the heart of the viewer.

ick a gym that is open the hours you think you’ll be using it. Location isn’t as important as hours and features, unless it is so distant as to interfere with your lifestyle. Pick one that offers what you need, not what you think it should have. If you don’t swim, or don’t plan to use the steam room, whirlpool, or even the locker room, or they include exercise classes in the price of admission, then why pay for services and things you won’t be using.
What is the attitude of the Gym? Will they make you feel stupid if you ask a question on how to set a machine? Does everyone in the Gym seem to look down on everyone who doesn’t look like them, and forget they we’re not born that way? Do they respect women or treat them like intruders? Are they friendly, do they want to help you or just want your money?
Is the Gym AND the locker room clean? Visit it more than once before signing up, see if the locker room is as clean the third day as the first day. Is the whole gym organized, brightly lit, heated and cooled adequately, has drinking fountains, or even stereo music or mounted televisions in the background to enjoy while exercising? Is the person working the desk trained, or just a counter clerk? Ask the people who belong to that Gym why they use it instead of others in the same city.
Will they let you work out once for free? Watch for hidden costs. Do they quote you one price, but then talk about a monthly maintenance fee? Is there another charge for locker rentals? For classes, or the whirlpool? Will they honor your relationship with your significant other and give you a "Family Membership" for you both? Do they offer a "Single Parent Membership," if you are a single gay parent with a child over the age of fourteen or sixteen? If you start out single, can you upgrade to a family membership if you found a life partner within the year? Can you freeze or suspend temporarily the clock on your membership if you have to travel for several weeks?
 | Do they provide you with towels? My Gym provides you with a hand towel, washcloth size towel to use to wipe away sweat during your workout, and also a bath towel for showering; you turn them in when you leave. Or, does the gym require you to bring your own towels. |
Some Gyms make you bring your own towels. That doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re going straight to work after exercising, you may not want a wet towel in your car all day.
Hopefully, if a gym towel is provided, it is big enough you can actually wrap yourself with and use, not like this poor guy. HaHa. So, if the gym says, "we provide towels," check to see what they mean before you join.
and chat with me about choosing a gym.

Gym Etiquette
ost Gyms have full-length mirrors, not for vanity but so you can watch yourself, your form, and if you’re holding a barbell level. Try not to walk between a mirror and another person working out; go around. | |
| Use your towel to wipe away all sweat from weights or machines after use. Drape your towel on the bench or seat, to absorb your sweat. | |
Don’t drop or throw the weights. If you need someone to spot for you, for safety, just ask someone. If you’re swinging weights around, give yourself room for people to get around you. Try not to "clink" your weights too loudly. Some exercises suggest bringing the weights together, but you can do it in such a way that it’s not annoying. Before you use the weights on a machine, pull on them slightly, to see if the weights stick; otherwise, if you pull them, you may pull more than you need, the other weights will break free with a loud clunk.
Some people enjoy exchanging friendly hellos but little more. It’s not that they’re unfriendly or rude; they’re concentrating, busy, focused. Remember, too, if they have headphones on they can’t hear you; use hand signals to get their attention. I find people will strike up a conversation if you ask them how they did what they just did, how long it took them to get to that level, or how to stand or hold an item.
No matter how hot you get, or how hot the room is, generally keep your shirt on. Rare is the most perfect person who works out in a public or private Gym shirtless or a halter-top.
If everyone keeps their gym towel on, in the whirlpool, sauna, or steam room, then keep yours on, too.
Just because someone walks away from a machine or weights doesn’t mean the person is done with them. He or she may be between repetitions. Ask if finished, wait patiently, or move on to another exercise and return later. Since the person is doing repetitions, perhaps ask to share the exercise, using the equipment during his or her rest break, and vise versa. Some machines may have sign up lists, check with the Gym Desk.
In the locker room, watch your space. Don’t spread out your gear, but keep it close to yourself. Someone may come in at the same time and be using the locker next to you. If you make a mess, clean it up. Put cologne on by the bathroom mirror, not by the dressing lockers; other people may not want wear your cologne, too. Pick up after yourself, towels go in the hamper, and trash in the trashcans.
Use a locker to store your clothes, and other personal items. I have seen some men just leave their bag, clothes, and stuff laying around; you might be honest, but your things could be stolen. Put a lock on your locker, or use one provided by your gym; always lock your locker!
If you meet someone in the gym or locker room that you admire and respect for their body development, be brave and say so. You would enjoy a self-esteem boost, and so would he/she. You might also make a new friend, or pick up an excercise tip you could use, too.
If you get on an exercise machine and there’s a mounted television nearby, check to see if the person next to you is watching that channel before you change it.
If you see someone drop his water bottle, book, or towel, pick it up and hand it back to him. That person will always remember, and smile at you every time he or she sees you.
and chat with me about gym etiquette.
