receive letters from all over the world. I personally answer every letter I receive, positive or negative. You may write me if you wish, I welcome your letters.
| Many letters I receive are requests for information or referrals to resources, requests for advice on life, questions from people trying to understand themselves and others around them; sometimes I just get letters from people hurting, needing someone to listen and care. | |
I also receive mail from people who show respect in their disagreements. Sadly, some other letters I receive are not very respectful.
o, I decided to share with you some of the common responses I give to people who write to me (their real names and detailed circumstances have been changed), so you might be able to learn and grow from them as I have.
Whether to you who are supportive, you who have troubles, or you who don't understand or oppose: I electronically wash your feet.
Peace and Hugs. Thanks. Ben

Dear Ben,
I am confused about my sexuality. Can you help me understand the meaning behind the Scripture verses in Romans, Corinthians, and other places that talk about homosexuality. Jeannette
Dear Jeannette,
Thanks for writing. You don’t know how much I appreciate it and you. Well, to be truthful, your confusion over your sexual orientation has nothing to do with your sexuality, nor does it have anything to do with the "correct" interpretation of Scripture verses. Rather, it has to do with who you are, who you see yourself as, and your relationship with God.
People who wrestle with sexuality issues or sexual orientation generally really wrestle with their self-image, self-acceptance, self-love, self-esteem, etc. When those real, more deeper issues are addressed in Christ, and only addressed in Christ, then the sexuality takes care of itself. The more you drop your preconceived ideas about Jesus, who he is and what he stands for, how he Loves, the more you begin to see yourself and accept yourself the way Christ does, when you begin to apply to yourself the unlimited Love Christ has for you, the more you begin to listen to what God says about you and not what other people or even yourself says about you, and find within yourself the same unconditional Love and acceptance that Jesus has already for you, then your self-image, self-Love, etc. will grow, mature and you shall find yourself, find centeredness, peace, joy, faith and Love. In so doing, your sexuality and sexual orientation shall fall into its rightful place and proper expression without any thought or effort.
Sexuality is a non-issue. It becomes one when it is denied, or out of balance. God calls you to Jesus, whereby you shall find your balance not only in your sexuality but in all other things that make you who you are, and you shall find in God the self-love and self-acceptance whereby you never have need of denial of self, but can stand with confidence, knowing who you are, and your relationship with God.
All Scriptures have to be interpreted and balanced against the Living Word of God, Jesus Christ. If not, then the interpretation is in error. So, we lift our ideas about them up to Christ, and see if they measure up to who He is, how He operates, what He stands for, and if it agrees with His Love. If you take the majority of interpretations of these Scripture verses, you will find they do not comply with Christ, nor with his law of Love.
In specific, the verses you mention never says in the Greek "homosexual." If Paul and the other authors wanted to, they could have used the Greek word for it, but they did not. Instead, in places translated as "homosexual," a slang expression is used, joining several different Greek words together, i.e. terms such as "soft," "bed," "effeminate," etc. These slang expressions applied to people they saw in the cities and streets who went against their nature, men trying to be women, men who sold themselves sexually, people who used sex in worship, people who worshipped self and not God, etc. Because the terms are so vague, it has been left to the centuries for people to interpret them to their own devices, apply their own prejudices, misinformation, etc. Such continues even today.
Scriptures never address the issue of sexual orientation, but they talk a lot about people who misuse sex in idol worship, prostitution, or who warped it to be against their real nature. All around them, in their Greco-Roman world, they saw same sex couples, and never negatively addressed them. For centuries, the Church performed same sex marriages. As the years passed, things got ugly and corrupt, and sexuality began to be seen as evil, dangerous, sinful, to be controlled, denied, etc. We suffer the results up to this day.
So, today, people deny other people their naturalness, and try to force them to be someone they are not, which goes against everything the apostle Paul meant and said. Such is not Love, and grieves Christ's heart.
The truth is, your sexual orientation is not a problem to God, only to people around you who don’t understand or accept anything which isn’t like them. God's universe is filled with diversity, but people demand gays and anyone else who is different in culture or life to comply and be the same as them. Such is not Love.
Christ said he had many people outside of the fold who He was going to call into the fold. Such are you. So, lift up your head, so you can see into Christ's eyes and face. In so seeing, you will see God’s Love and acceptance for you. Start applying it to yourself. I hope this has helped you. Again, thanks for writing. I wash your feet. Peace and hugs, Ben
